This is a replica of the poppet heads that were prevalent in the early part of the 20th century around Waihi. It was built in 2000 as part of the streetscape improvements.
It was constructed with funding from the owners of the Martha Mine at that time, Normandy Mining, Otto Gold and partners. Poppet heads were the frameworks supporting the cages that lowered and raised the men and machinery into the mines.
