Waihi Heritage

Waihi is located on the Southern Coromandel Penisula of New Zealand. It has a rich history of goldmining that continues into the present day alongside agriculture, horticulture and many other businesses. It was also home to a thriving electronics manufacturer and was once part of the important East Coast Main Trunk Railway Line.

Waihi township established itself around mining since the discovery of gold in 1878. The Martha Mine eventually grew into one of the world's most important gold and silver mines. Mining in Waihi stopped in 1952 but was restarted again in 1987 and continues today.
